Most similar to a polo coat, this Outer Gown is an ideal balance between the casual comfort of an unstructured jacket and the formality of a proper length overcoat. It can be worn in several different ways; with the belt tied and collar down in its most traditional wrap coat style, or loosely open with the collar popped for a devil-may-care louche look.

Ideally paired with flannels and knitwear, this coat is also at home over jeans and a shirt or even tailoring. Dress it up or down depending on mood. The style of the coat works for both smart and casual outfits.

Historically polo coats would be thrown over the shoulders of polo and tennis players between chukkas or sets. Their easy style was ideally suited to gentlemen in sportswear and it is this hybrid smart/casual aspect that the Gownsmith Outer Gowns have inherited from polo coats.

The Cloth

Heavy, sumptuous 22oz pure wool in a brown glen check; perfect for a traditional polo coat. The hazelnut and cream pattern makes for a warm, autumnal tone. The deep blue lining perfectly complements the outer fabric, and is, naturally, our signature blue as found on the trimming of the lounge and resort gowns.

Wool is without doubt the best choice for overcoating fabric both from a performance point of view, but also thanks to its sustainability. At Gownsmith we are proud proponents of wool as a material and encourage you to read more of the Campaign for Wool.

Shipping & Returns

We offer free standard delivery within the UK. International orders will be shipped at a flat rate of £25, which will be added at the Checkout stage. All orders will be shipped within three working days, and sent via courier. We will make every effort to get your order out to you sooner if it is possible. Any duties or import charges due on international orders are the responsibility of the customer.

We offer free returns with 14 days of delivery, assuming the item is in a saleable perfect condition when it is returned to us. We regret that we cannot offer returns for made to order products. If you do need to return or exchange an item for another size of colour, please simply email us with your information and we will guide you through the process.
